Like stashing the skates and breaking out the barbecue, the annual Ottawa Home & Garden Show is practically a rite of spring. This year, the popular showcase of renovating, decorating and gardening ideas has left its traditional home at Lansdowne Park for spiffy new digs at the CE Centre near the Macdonald-Cartier International Airport.
More than 350 exhibitors and presenters will be on hand from March 22 to 25. They range from kitchen and bath experts to landscapers and solar power companies. Designers and others, including Bryan Baeumler, host of HGTV’s Disaster DIY, will lead seminar-style presentations.
Must-sees this year:
Bonneville Homes
Quebec-based Bonneville Homes, which builds innovative modular homes, is back with a new product: the Natur-I. Part of its three-model Natur series, the 1,224-square-foot home is a natural for either smaller city lots or country living.
The home, priced at about $200,000 including delivery and assembly, comes in two factory-made sections with a finished exterior, full kitchen and bath, plumbing and electrical systems and painted interior. The two pieces are yoked together at the building site and usually sit on a full basement. The building lot, foundation, and hydro/water hook-up costs are not included in the purchase price.
The modern-themed Natur-I features high ceilings, full-length windows and wooden floors.
Garden galore
Dreading the summer ritual of endless grass cutting? Check out the Dream Garden by Ottawa’s Davis Landscape and Design.
At almost 3,000 square feet, it’s the ultimate solution for increasing living space while decreasing the maintenance burden. The garden, which includes more than 400 plants, boasts interlocking brick by Permacon, an outdoor kitchen and dining section and a separate seating area with an outdoor fireplace and water feature.
“It’s our third year at the show and we’re going with the outdoor living trend this time,” says Matthew Davis, vice-president of operations at Davis Landscape and Design. “It fits with the more modern style of pergolas and living room-style furniture instead of the traditional grass and trees.”
By using interlocking brick, the design still meets municipal requirements for permeable space, he says. And while the lack of trees and grass in your yard cuts down on wildlife habitation and means the planet has one less place to convert carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) into oxygen, a dream garden also means no pollution-spewing gas lawn mower or wasteful grass watering.
Not that a dream garden is cheap. Figure about $70,000 for the design you’ll see at the Home Show. That could be whittled back to $40,000 or so for smaller lots or budgets.
“With landscaping, everything is customizable,” says Davis.
International flare
Looking for something to combat electrosmog, the electromagnetic radiation from cellphone towers and other sources that apparently trigger headaches and other ailments in hypersensitive folks? Or maybe you’ve heard about the Corkcicle, the nifty invention that keeps your white wine at perfect drinking temperature while the bottle sits on the table?
These and a slew of other neat items make up the Ottawa Home & Garden Show’s first-ever International Product Showcase. Here’s a sampling with approximate costs.
Modlet by ThinkEco: You already know that electronic devices like cellphone battery chargers and televisions consume power even when they’re not turned on. That’s because many devices have an instant-on feature, a digital clock or other gizmo that chews up “phantom power” 24/7. The modlet, which you plug into an ordinary electrical outlet and then plug your devices into, helps you control phantom power costs by automatically shutting off power to your appliances when you don’t need them. The modlet’s wireless feature lets you use your web browser to monitor and manage power consumption. $50.
PermaFLOW No Clog Drain by PF WaterWorks: Bid adieu to chemical drain cleaners, messy sessions with a rubber plunger and expensive calls to the plumber, according to this manufacturer. Its see-through plastic P-trap is designed to increase water movement and therefore decrease the buildup of blockage-causing gunk. If there is a block, turning the handle on the side of the P-trap operates an internal wiper that whisks away the blockage. The wiper also makes it easier to fish jewelry and other stuff out of the trap from above. $19.95.
Energain/Energetic Gypsum by DuPont: If you are doing a major renovation, addition or new build, these foil-covered panels could be for you. Installed under ordinary gyprock on a well-insulated wall, they provide thermal mass in the same way concrete and other heavier construction materials do: by absorbing and storing heat, whether from solar gain or from heating systems, and releasing it when the room cools down, typically in the evening. DuPont says the product can reduce heating costs by up to 15 per cent and cooling costs by up to 35 per cent. Cost: Price not available.
Drivable Grass by Soil Retention: Turn your driveway green — literally. A lattice-like system composed of small concrete pads, this product provides a flexible, even surface for parking and other heavy use. Spaces between the pads allow water to penetrate the soil, reducing stormwater run-off that occurs on asphalt driveways and can overburden sewer systems during heavy rainfalls. Better yet, grass grows up between the pads, giving your driveway an easy-on-the-eyes look that you don’t get with paved surfaces. $3 per square foot.
Dado Bricks by Fat Brain Toy Co.: When you were a child, didn’t you wish you could clamber into the Lego buildings you’d constructed? Your own children can do it, sort of, thanks to colourful plastic Dado Bricks. The large interlocking bricks look like the perfect building material for kid-sized houses, forts, whatever tickles your youngster’s fancy. More than just fun, the manufacturer says they help build motor skills, creativity and other good things. $49 for 30 pieces.

Sneak peek at FurBall gala: Menu takes on a colourful Bollywood theme
Release Date: 07-Mar-2012
From Omnivore's Ottawa, a blog by Ottawa Citizen Food writer Ron Eade,
I’m often impressed by how chefs can cleverly craft a meal for a major event that balances creativity and wow! appeal with hard, cold reality. On one hand, they recognize not everyone is an adventurous eater, yet at the same time most chefs want to show off their best work. Couple those dynamics with political realities that frequently come into play, plus the logistics of serving literally hundreds at a sitting, and the challenges are considerable.
MAR 07 12 - 9:50 AM — I’m often impressed by how chefs can cleverly craft a meal for a major event that balances creativity and wow! appeal with hard, cold reality. On one hand, they recognize not everyone is an adventurous eater, yet at the same time most chefs want to show off their best work. Couple those dynamics with political realities that frequently come into play, plus the logistics of serving literally hundreds at a sitting, and the challenges are considerable.
img logo humane Sneak peek at FurBall gala: Menu takes on a colourful Bollywood themeSo, my hat is off to anyone who can deftly devise and cater a menu for an annual gala of, say, 300 people, and keep them all happy. Now, make it an annual fundraiser for the Ottawa Humane Society, and you’ve got other considerations that come to the fore.
Even at $300 a plate, an audience of 300 at the 8th annual FurBall gala, this year on March 24 at the National Gallery of Canada, is not going to accept foie gras or other dishes that may seem controversial. Serving bunny rabbit as a main course would be out of the question, too. I’m betting offal would not go over well, either.
On the other hand, guests expect an elegant and satisfying meal. As many as 10 per cent can usually be expected to request a vegetarian option, which is the case at practically any large gathering these days. But the vast majority will be looking for meat — which tends to alarm animal rights extremists, who don’t accept that the humane society is an animal welfare organization and not an animal rights activist group. (They’ve picketed in the past, and this year demanded — again — a vegan meal.)
This year, chef John Leung at K.W. Catering and Events, which runs the food operation at the National Gallery, has struck an impressive balance with colourful dishes that offer textural and flavour contrasts. The colour part is important, as the FurBall has adopted a Bollywood theme for 2012 (last year, the theme was Hollywood. Every year, however, it’s always about the animals).
And while the plates are certainly attractive, many carry textural and flavour adaptations from India.
This is the sixth year FurBall has been held at the gallery (previously, it has been at Brookstreet, and at the Fairmont Château Laurier).
First course for the FurBall gala: Fennel seed poached prawns, tomato and fennel slaw, prawn cracker and paprika dust with roasted yellow pepper emulsion. The prawns are huge, size 6/7 to the pound; the peeled tomato enriched by compression in plastic vac-pack with tomato juice. The fennel is enlivened with citrus-note vinaigrette. And for crunch, the prawn cracker is made with a tapioca base, dry shrimp, then baked until crisp.
“The theme allows me to introduce East Indian spices with the colours of Bollywood,” John says.
“My challenge was, I didn’t want to do something that was done before. Normally it’s beef or chicken, and last year we had both. People tend to choose either because they’re safe and have broad appeal. And we’ve always have a vegetarian option.
“But this year I decided to go with duck breast as the main. It’s a red meat and it’s poultry (from Mariposa Farm in Plantagenet) and it’s the first time duck has been served at the FurBall. I think duck is a natural fit to take on a lot of spices, balanced with some sweetness.”
Honey-glazed Magret duck breast with curry lentil and duck confit tartlet, cauliflower purée.
I was invited to sample the final menu on Tuesday with Stephanie Kersey, director of social media at Knock on Wood Communications and Events, after it was tasted and approved the previous day by organizers. Impressive, creatively simple with nuanced flavours and textures — and beautiful to behold. Judge for yourself.
Last year the FurBall raised an impressive $170,000 for activities at the humane society. Among live auction items this year:
- New York Fashion Week Spring Collection: Two passes, round trip airfare and three nights at the Marriott Marquis, New York City, to attend fashion week in September;

Limited number of tickets for the evening still available at the Ottawa Humane Society website.
Dessert: Saffron white chocolate mousse, apricot sorbet, and chocolate mikado (the thin stick leaning against the mousse).
Montreal Visual Effects Studio Brings the Battle with the Gods to Life in Immortals.

BarXseven Visual Effects, was one of the main VFX vendors for Immortals, the $75+ million, 3D action fantasy adventure that achieved “number one” at the box office upon its release this past weekend, (11.11.11).
Immortals is an epic feast- a rennaissance painting brought to life through a stunning combination of live action photography and visual effects – the kind of eye candy for which Director, Tarsem Sing has become known. BarXseven, known not only for their ability to design, but also to create high-end works for Feature Films, was responsible for creating over 100 shots from concept through completion. The result – a visual collage of slaughter that drew the following observation from the New York Times, “Despite the carnage the effect is as artful as it is graphic.”
To underscore Tarsem’s quintessential style and vision, the visual effects experts at BarXseven were tasked by Relativity Media to design some of Immortals’ more creative and complex sequences during preproduction. Jay Randall, the company founder and VFX supervisor, then supervised 2nd unit for the entire shoot. Once shot on set, the BarXseven team perfected the VFX –heavy sequences.
The level of effects complexity in Immortals can be seen when the character “Aries”, a god played by Daniel Sharman, rampages with incredible fury, and smashes with his war hammer, the heads off the Heraklion army of humans under Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) to save Theseus (Henry Cavill). Tarsem figured that the gods’ version of real time would move so fast that humans would be virtually stationary and their heads would explode in slow motion. This visual was achieved by filming the sequence in multiple layers with different cameras. Aries was filmed hitting targets on a green screen with a regular speed camera, then, the Heraklions were filmed in separate passes with a super high-speed camera. BarXseven then combined all the footage and created the computer simulated heads exploding in extreme slow motion.
Another challenging sequence for the artists at BarXseven occurs when Zeus lands on earth and lashes Aries with a fire whip. “Creating a wind-blown fire whip at 500 frames per second in a computer is a challenging endeavor”, Randall explains. “On set, we shot Zeus (Luke Evans) holding a whip handle but no whip. He executed a whipping motion, and we created a computer generated whip and simulated the fire. It was shot in extreme slow motion as well”.
Relativity Media’s, Raymond Gieringer, Production Visual Effects Supervisor for Immortals, chose BarXseven for the project because of the studio’s expertise in handling shots that require high degrees of creativity and skill. Having worked with the studio on Mr. Magoriums Wonder Emporium and Law Abiding Citizen, BarXseven has become one of Geiringer’s go-to VFX resources.
Gieringer has this to say of BarXseven’s work on the film, “BarXseven have proven time and time again that they have the ability to create effects that are of the highest standard. On Immortals, they delivered one of the most breathtaking sequences I think audiences have seen, and that speaks to their commitment and talent. I consider them trusted collaborators and look forward to working with Jay and gang in future.
Randall and his team at BarXseven are presently working on Relativity Media’s latest project, Mirror, Mirror, the highly-anticipated Snow White feature due out March, 2012.
In addition to Randall, artists Rob Rosello, Charles Lequen, Mitch Deoudes and Stephen Elphick comprised BarXseven’s core artistic VFX team for Immortals. The total scope of work undertaken encompassed: FX animation, fire and liquid simulation, particles, dust and smoke, digital environments, matte painting, paint work and multi layer compositing.
