Next up - CanFit Pro's Trainer of the Year, Jules Hilliker will be leading a special Boot Camp Class on Sunday, February 17 from 11am to 12pm.

The progressive rock band Saga performs at Ottawa’s Centrepointe Theatre for a single 8 pm concert to showcase their latest album 20/20. This album is Saga’s first since the return of the singer Michael Sadler to the band. The founding member left in 2007 to take a break and is back in full form to bring back such radio hits as On the Loose, The Flyer and Scratching the Surface. The multi-award winning group has toured the globe countless times, and has sold over 8 million albums worldwide.

Founded in 1977, Saga has a unique sound that fans love. Joining Michael are Jim Crichton on bass and keyboards, Ian Crichton on lead guitar, Jim Gilmour on keyboards, clarinet, and vocals as well as Mike Thorne on drums and vocals also. The Snowsuit Fund is an Ottawa-based charity that raises funds for the purchase and distribution of snowsuits to needy children, 15 years and under, in our community.

We are just one social organization working to deal with the consequences of poverty in our region. But like so many of our sister organizations, the demand for our services continues to grow. In our 2011/2012 season, we distributed over 15,000 new snowsuits.

Now in our 31st year of operation, we have managed to meet the challenge of keeping underprivileged kids warm during our cold winters. We have also brought dignity and hope to families who simply do not have the means to provide their children with the necessities for living. The benefits of our service are far-reaching for both individuals and our community as a whole. Ultimately, one cannot put a price tag on a child’s smile.

Although we hope to one day close our doors for good, we realize that in the short term, we must continue to ensure that no child is left out in the cold. To do that, we rely entirely on the dedication of our staff, volunteer Board of Directors and the countless caring groups and individuals who give their time, money and talent to The Snowsuit Fund. Thanks to their commitment, we are able to keep our administrative costs low and focus our financial resources on purchasing snowsuits. Fortunately, we have been able to establish healthy relationships with several Canadian snowsuit manufacturers. Sakto’s Grape Stomp is an exciting team relay race designed in partnership with the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation and the Preston Street BIA to raise funds for cancer research within our community.

Sakto’s Grape Stomp is a timed team relay race that features a grape stomp, preparation of traditional Italian cuisine (toss pizza dough to 12” and make pasta) and finish off the relay by setting the table to enjoy the fruits of your labour,  one catch though, 2 of your teammates will be blindfolded! Mama Mia!

Chef Kurt Waldele former Executive Chef of the National Arts Centre, had a passion for animals that rivalled his passion for food. For many years, Kurt held a garden party at his home to raise money for the Ottawa Humane Society (OHS). Friends of Kurt have teamed together to present this OHS fundraiser in his memory, Sunday August 28, 2pm to 5pm at the new OHS facility, 245 West Hunt Club Road. You’ll sample food from more than 20 Ottawa area chefs, many of whom work at embassies and venues that are not readily accessible to the public. As well you’ll taste the wines from Niagara, Prince Edward County and beyond. Tickets are $100 (visit www.ottawahumane.ca) for a rare culinary experience in support of this worthy cause.

Thanks to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Sport of Kings – Polo for Heart is coming to the Ottawa area for the first time ever on August 6 and 7, 2011.  All proceeds from the 4-team polo tournament will go to the Foundation, the only organization in Canada solely dedicated to funding research into this country’s leading cause of death: heart disease and stroke.

Huntingford Farm will host the 2-day competition. A very special opportunity has been created to further support the Foundation: for a sponsorship of $1000, a field-side table for eight guests with fire-grilled lunch, complimentary beverages; and Polo for Heart memorabilia will be provided.

Gates open both Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 am.  Two polo matches will be played each day beginning at 1 and 3 pm respectively with the championship match scheduled for 3 pm Sunday, August 7.  Half-time entertainment will be provided as well.
